P oucette and S erge C reuz

or the academy years and first love

In addition to this, you need to know more about it.

1942 - 1943

In addition to this, you need to know more about it.

For Serge, it was Petite Moene or Moeny; a variation of "little moon". They met in the drawing class at the Académie des Beaux Arts, rue du Midi, as well as in Joris Minne's illustration course at the Abbaye de la Cambre. Roger Someville and John Eggericx also attended.

It was the first love, romantic love, walks in the forest, dreams of a future free from parents and above all free from war. At dusk, Poucette upstairs looks out of her bedroom window, which overlooks the Sonian forest. The military father growls upstairs. Serge, in the dark, spies on him sitting on a bench, their bench. They crack matches in the night. Marriage promises, sketches of a future home; they start by sharing a workshop and bite into each other.

Louis Manteau from the renowned Galerie Manteau de la Porte Louise visited them and was won over by their designs. An exhibition is organized around the theme:

To love oneself to be stronger than war, to love oneself strong, too strong. Poucette is suffocating, his urgent thirst for freedom is exacerbated by an extremely authoritarian military father. Serge is possessive and does not support Poucette's outings when he is not around.

She then turns to the future architect John Eggericx, a quiet and silent force. Serge lives his grief badly, his jealousy finds no appeasement and takes disastrous proportions.

"I will not know how to paint maybe for ten years, Moene (Poucette)  has been painting since his birth ..."

Serge Creuz

(09/24/43 Letter addressed to Madeleine Fauconier)

Going through the book that Serge Creuz wrote towards the end of his life, this episode is told as follows:

"I wandered and in my pocket I squeezed a roughing-board. It is a sharp triangular blade, like the bayonet. so esteemed by the French army, which is used for drypoint. Could the madman that I was have become a criminal? Fortunately, neither Poucette nor my happy rival never knew anything about it. "

That's what Serge believes, because I heard from my grandmother's own mouth this chase in the forest. I thought she was exaggerating.

The other event that marked a turning point in Poucette's academic career was that Serge slapped her in the middle of Joris Minne's class. The latter covers Serge and Poucette is expelled from the academy for treason; in the eyes of the professor, it is a horror. Thumbelina is devastated and sends a letter of justification to Joris Minne. But she won't go back to school anymore.

Twenty years later, Serge took over as Joris Minne's professor of illustration at the Abbaye de la Cambre.

Jean Raine will say of Serge Creuz in his text "Portrait" (1985):

"Excellent memories of his life and his tumultuous loves. This sentimental brawler has since cooled down."

Indeed, Poucette and Serge find themselves as comrades some time later since they will exhibit together several times. They also meet in Paris in the 60s when Poucette lives there and she is delighted to be able to exchange artistic impressions with him.
